Welcome to Broken Pencil! Since 1995, we have been a mega-zine dedicated exclusively to exploring independent creative action. Published four times a year, each issue of Broken Pencil features reviews of hundreds of zines and small press books, plus comics, excerpts from the best of the underground press, interviews, original fiction and commentary on all aspects of the indie arts. From the hilarious to the perverse, Broken Pencil challenges conformity and demands attention.

Editor – Jonathan Valelly
Jonathan Valelly聽is a writer, zinester, and community artist.聽His writing has appeared in Canadian Notes & Queries,聽Xtra!, Noisey, and聽Quill & Quire. He is also a co-editor at Gay 4 Pay Press, a zine distributor focusing on radical politics and gay men. In recent years, he was a聽lead artist and bookmaker with Making Room Community Arts in Parkdale.



Assistant Editor – Anisa Rawhani

Anisa Rawhani is the Assistant Editor of Broken Pencil. She works as a journalist and editor in Toronto 鈥 and would like nothing more than for you to send her wholesome photos of your pets. Doggos, kittens, piglets, ducklings, cows, bunnies, and all others are welcome. She does not discriminate.


halFounder and Publisher – Hal Niedzviecki
Hal Niedzviecki is a writer, speaker, culture commentator and editor whose work challenges preconceptions and confronts readers with the offenses of everyday life. He is the author of over ten books including the novel The Archaeologists (ARP), a collection of short stories Look Down, This is Where it Must Have Happened (City Lights, April 2011) and the nonfiction book Trees on Mars: Our Obsession with the Future (Seven Stories Press).

Associate Publisher – Tara Gordon FlintTara
Tara Flint is the Associate Publisher, Business and Circulation Manager at Broken Pencil. Tara introduced the spreadsheet to BP in 1999 and brings a broad background in marketing, event planning, finance, and management. Tara is responsible for marketing and promotions, circulation, accounting, public relations and fundraising.



Design – Ian Sullivan Cant
Ian Sullivan Cant聽is the Design Editor of聽Broken Pencil. He is an artist, writer, graphic designer and wannabe falconer.




Fiction Editor – Sofia Mostaghimi

Sofia Mostaghimi (MO-stah-GHEE-mee) is a fiction writer and secondary school teacher. Of Persian and Qu茅b茅cois descent, she was born in Sherbrooke (Qc.),聽and raised in Mississauga (Ont.), where she mastered the art of hanging out. She completed her M.A. in Creative Writing at the University of Toronto and was Fiction Curator for the Emerging Writer’s Reading Series in Toronto from 2013 to 2015.


Sending/Submitting Publications to Broken Pencil for Review

Broken Pencil accepts zines, ezine urls, books, videos/films, music recordings and mail-art for review. To submit you must mail your work to us at PO Box 203, Station P, Toronto, Ontario M5S 2S7 CANADA or email your ezine url to [email protected]. If you are mailing us something to review, please include on a separate piece of paper the following information: name of publication, name of the creator/publisher, the price (please note whether or not that price includes postage), and the contact mailing address and email. We will not review material that does not have contact information. We look forward to seeing your work, but keep in mind that Broken Pencil reserves the right to review whatever it feels like, and may not review a particular publication for a variety of reasons.
